Mood: Just a teensy bit tired/lonely
What he saw was darkness, what he smelled was death, what he heard was the wind gently rolling over the mass of bodies cloaked in black and white, stained red by both their own blood and that of their enemies. He took a deep breath, feeling completely at peace, in utter solitude was where he belonged. He then sensed a presence walk up to him. He tried to move but he was not able to, the strain was too much of a burden on his body.
“Are you alive?” The other presence asked.
“Maybe. I can’t tell anymore.”
“Don’t die...”
“Why? I kill to live.”
“But it doesn’t mean your life is forfeit, you may be a general, but you don’t always have to be the first one to charge into battle.”
“Should you really be saying that to your enemy?”
“You can’t be replaced.” The youth laying on the barren ground opened his eyes. The color of his eyes looked like golden champagne yet were full of despair. His pupils were not round but rather long vertical slits giving him the appearance of a large feline. He wore a steel mask that covered his nose and cheeks and he had premature gray hair fashioned into a bowl-cut. His eyes shifted to where he heard the voice.
“The Northern General Joy Hartsdale. I figured it was you.” The mysterious young man attempted to get up using a large black pole at his side as a crutch. But at further inspection it was not a pole, it was the large black shaft of a spear. The curved steel blade was covered in dried blood, the result of his collapsing after the battle.
“Western General Cain.” General Hartsdale grabbed Cain’s unaided side and assisted him. The peculiar thing about it was that Joy was small in stature, her frame was diminutive yet helping Cain to his feet was effortless for her. Her long strawberry blonde hair was tied in pigtails that fell to her waist, tied by bright green ribbons. Her eyes were the same shade of green as her hair ornaments and were heart-shaped, an obvious contrast to Cain’s. She wore a large pendant around her neck and a white sleeveless buttoned top with a blue skirt. Her clothes were not those of someone who held a military position.
“I can get up myself, I don’t require your help.” Cain pushed the young girl out of the way and started to limp, using his spear as a walking stick. He wore a long black trench coat with a white neckerchief and blood stained that had claws protruding at the ends. His long baggy pants coupled with dark boots added to his ominous image. Despite his protestations, he found it hard to walk, and whenever he moved, he felt a large pain in his side.
“You won’t be able to walk around with that arrow in you.” Joy stated, and Cain looked down and saw a bloody arrow sticking out from his stomach.
“I’ve had worse.” He stoically proclaimed, grabbing the arrow and tearing it out of his body without hesitation. He brought the arrow to Joy’s face and crushed it in front of her, a testament of his fortitude. The shards of wood then burst into dark flames. Joy started to tear up. “What’s wrong? I am just fine, there is no need to worry about my well-being.” Cain said awkwardly, as he brushed the ashes out of his hand. Joy began to cry. This emotional outburst was then followed by a swift punch to his stomach.
“I love you Cain.” She sobbed. “So why do you have to be so stupid and get yourself injured all the time?” Joy buried herself in Cain’s chest and pounded on his shoulder. Cain put his lips to her head, she had the scent of honey and chamomile, he then kissed her and placed his hand on her soft chin.
“I fight to end the fighting. I want you to understand this. When the fighting ends, then we can truly be happy, but as long as we keep on fighting for different sides we cannot be together.”
“But what happens when we have to fight each other?” Joy asked, wiping away her pure, pristine tears.
“I won’t let that happen.” Cain responded, and brought her closer to him, letting her hear his heart beat pound to a solemn rhythm. It then began to rain and the air became as silent as the lifeless battlefield.
What he saw was a love that could not be shattered, what he smelled was sweetness and purity, and what he heard was the coming of a new era which he was about to create with his own two hands.
